The other day someone was heating up some mac and cheese in the studio, and the microwave started to make this particular horn-like sound; so I had to record it. After playing the video back, I noticed that the microwave was playing the same notes and rhythmic patterns consecutively. So then i proceeded to transcribe it.
After transcribing and analyzing this awesome melody, I could say that this piece (or improv by the microwave) is in the key of b minor 7, but it adds some microtones for more texture and sauce.
In this improvisation I portray the juxtaposition between the soft and warm kalimba as it clashes with the abrasive sounds of the splash cymbal. Both sounds oddly balance each other out, and produce a weird, mysterious, and whimsical sound experience.
Every sound was produced by a Kalimba
Short orchestral piece written for and dedicated to Monica Avalos
Graphic Score
featuring:
Sergio Ochoa - Flute
Kris Calicdan - Vibes/glock/snare/voice
Alec Wingfield - Guitar
Xinyi Chong - Vibes and paper
Adrian Tamez - Voice/sound effects
Ariana Aviña - Multi-percussion
I came up with this piece because I was trying to record myself playing vibes, but the noises around my apartment did not allow me to do so. Therefore, I recorded the sounds that surround my neighborhood and mixed them together. I added effects to highlight the clash between silence and noise.
Solo for Snare Drum and Tape
It is not a cookie is based on the it is not a cookie video from Sesame Street. I translated the dialogue to morse code and then had it play by the drum. The head of the snare drum represents the dates, while the rim symbolizes the dots. The claves, triangle, and piano represent the slashes that signify the separation of words. So throughout the piece the snare is telling the dialogue of the video in morse code.
This is an arrangement of Delecluse 9 being played on the vibes with the melody of Beethoven 5. Additionally, I added a soundscape synth on the background to give an even more experimental vibe.
